Why The Name
The Reason Behind Our Name
1 Samuel 30:8. “And David enquired at the LORD, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? Shall I overtake them? And He answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.”
David was at his lowest. He had lost everything—his family, his possessions, and his peace of mind. But worse than the loss, David knew he had made some grave mistakes. He had misled his men, aligned himself with an enemy army, and turned his back on God’s plan. After being rejected by that army, David had nowhere to turn but to his own camp, only to discover it had been destroyed by the Amalekites. Their wives and children had been taken, their homes burned to the ground, and everything they had worked for was gone in an instant.
David’s heart broke as he saw the devastation caused by his own misguided decisions. Yet, in that moment of hopelessness, he knew where to turn. David didn’t rely on his own wisdom or strength. Instead, he turned to God, the one source of hope he could trust. He humbly sought God’s guidance, asking for the ephod—a symbol of his priestly authority—and began to seek God's direction.
What is truly remarkable about this story is the grace and mercy God extends to David. God never questioned him about his past mistakes or his failure to lead rightly. God never accused him of treason or made him feel unworthy. Instead, God responded with love and compassion. David, broken and repentant, asked God, “Shall I pursue them? Shall I overtake them?” And God answered with assurance: “Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.”
The key to this story is that God’s plan for David was never thwarted by his mistakes. God didn’t condemn him for his past decisions but offered him a path to restoration. God’s word was clear: “Pursue, and without fail, recover all.” And that’s exactly what David did.
David pursued the Amalekites, and with God's guidance, he not only recovered everything that had been taken from him and his men but he went beyond that—he took the spoils of the enemy as his own. Nothing was missing. No one was left behind. David and his men experienced full restoration.
